#FeesMustFall

Dit is ’n week waaroor daar nog lank in die geskiedenisboeke geskryf gaan word, meen kenners. Niemand kan die impak van die studenteprotes #FeesMustFall betwyfel nie – en met behulp van sosiale media het studente die hele land oor hieraan begin deelneem by die meeste groot universiteite. Dit heers op sosiale media, op die voorblaaie, selfs op die loopplank by die Suid-Afrikaanse Modeweek. Daar word wyd oor #NationalShutDown in die internasionale media geskryf en selfs die Britte gaan vandag in Londen byeenkom om hul ondersteuning te wys.

Volgens EWN word daar ongeveer 300 twiets per minuut gedeel met #FeesMustFall. Gedurende die nag is daar meer as 140 000 twiets wêreldwyd gestuur.

Aubrey Matshiqi, onafhanklike politieke ontleder, het [gister] vroeër die oggend op die Universiteit Stellenbosch se Buro vir Ekonomiese Ondersoek se jaarkonferensie gesê: “#FeesMustFall is nie oor universiteitsgeld nie, soos ­#RhodesMustFall nie oor ’n beeld was nie. Dit is oor goed wat nie verander het sedert 1994 nie. Die jeug is in 1994 die koninkryk van die hemele belowe, maar vir hulle het dit nie ’n werklikheid geword nie.”

Songezo Zibi, redakteur van Business Day, het geskryf die gebeure is ’n aanduiding dat tradisionele politiek minder relevant word. “Dis ’n nuwe bevrydingsbeweging wat gebore is uit frustrasie omdat die parlementêre prosesse nie die vlak van verandering teweegbring wat mense wil hê nie.”
